If an unexpected burst or supply interruption occurred, we typically got water flowing again in under 90 minutes.

The Grafham to Cambridge pipeline is a major project, delivered with Anglian Water, to secure a reliable and sustainable water supply for a fast-growing and climate-vulnerable region. Spanning around 25–28 km (part of a wider 70 km network), it will transfer water from Grafham Water to Cambridge, supplying up to 26 million litres per day once operational in the early 2030s.

The scheme is designed to support new housing and economic growth while reducing pressure on sensitive local water sources like chalk streams and aquifers. It also prioritises environmental protection and community engagement, ensuring long-term resilience to drought and climate change.

The Grafham to Cambridge pipeline is just the first step in a wider plan to transform how water is shared across the East of England.

We are also working with Anglian Water to invest in Fens Reservoir. This is set to have a capacity of 50 billion litres and will supply 100 million litres of water a day, enough for around 250,000 homes. Construction is set to take six to eight years, providing water by 2036 at the earliest.

Protecting the environment

£25 million to significantly reduce water waste

In 2025, we improved 916 hectares of land through our environmental and biodiversity projects.

The programme of works being delivered across Cambridge aims to protect and enhance biodiversity, with a focus on restoring chalk streams, improving river health, and creating wildlife habitats.

Assessments showed local ecosystems were under pressure, with risks of river deterioration and habitat loss without intervention.

Actions include improving biodiversity across multiple sites, supporting sustainable farming through the SPRING programme, funding community projects via the PEBBLE Fund, and creating habitats like wildflower corridors and ponds. These efforts aim to deliver cleaner water, healthier ecosystems, and more resilient landscapes for both wildlife and local communities.

How do we finance this critical investment?

The water sector is one of the most critical in the world. That means the amount we pay for water services and the quality of the service provided are crucial for everyone.

Ofwat plays an important role as one of our regulatory bodies.

Ofwat sets water pricing and investment through a five-yearly ‘Price Review’ process. Because regional water companies are monopolies, Ofwat steps in to act as a substitute for competition, ensuring companies deliver necessary infrastructure while keeping bills fair for our customers.

To keep clean water flowing, we need to spend millions of pounds. That means fixing old pipes, upgrading equipment and protecting the environment.

Customer bills help, but they don’t cover everything. So, we work with investors to raise extra money.
