Fallowfield Rain Gardens

PEBBLE fund

Water Sensitive Cambridge was awarded £3,000 from the PEBBLE fund for their phase two Fallowfield Rain Gardens.

SlowFlow planterFallowfields Rain Gardens is a multi-year project to develop low-cost and effective nature-based solutions at the scale of a neighbourhood to make better use of rainwater in the catchment.

These solutions make places for water and nature, help tackle local flooding, and boost biodiversity.

Water Sensitive Cambridge is proving that rain garden retrofit projects are possible with limited space, time, disruption or money.

After the successful installation of the Fallowfield Rain Gardens, phase two, in which the PEBBLE fund was awarded, saw the installation of SlowFlow SuDS planters in the drainage catchment of Fallowfield, East Chesterton.

The SlowFlow planters connect to downpipes, capturing rainwater from roofs and reducing the pressure on drains. Plants were chosen in consultation with Darwin Nurseries and the residents of the apartments. A mix of herbs, flowers, shrubs and grass can be enjoyed by both human and non-human residents.

SlowFlow planter purpose description

When it rains, these planters have the potential to save hundreds of litres of water from reaching the junction at Fallowfield and Fen Road.
