Black Poplar pebble pond

Coton Loves Pollinators was awarded £5,315 for its poplar pebble pond project, which aimed to create a new pond centred on the conservation of the rare Black Poplar, one of the UK's most endangered native tree species. The site was selected because Black Poplars thrive in wet environments such as floodplains and ditches.

The funding contributed towards the cost of pond excavation, the purchase of 50 fruit trees, and associated items including tree stakes, wildflower seeds, smaller 'wild larder' trees and plants, and wetland planting.

Working alongside local partners and volunteers, the project team created the pond and established new trees and wildflower areas. Together, these improvements have:

  • created a new wetland habitat to support local wildlife

  • contributed to the conservation of the rare Black Poplar, one of the UK's most endangered native tree species

  • increased biodiversity through the planting of 50 fruit trees, wildflowers and wetland plants

  • enhanced habitats for pollinators, birds, hedgehogs and other wildlife

  • improved the site's environmental resilience and long-term sustainability

  • engaged local volunteers and partners in the creation and management of the habitat

  • built on previous community-led environmental projects to create a richer and more connected landscape
