Paving the way for a brighter future
Cambridge Water is helping a Milton charity pave the way for a brighter future.
The Phoenix Trust is a Social Enterprise which provides work experience and training for those excluded from main-stream education as well as people with learning difficulties and mental health issues by giving them the opportunity to make and sell garden landscape products such as paving slabs, picnic benches and bird tables.
Popularity for its products has been so great the organisation was desperate to expand and contacted Cambridge Water for help with its plight.
The water company, which runs a donations and grants scheme to support local good causes, responded by providing enough cash to purchase a new work shed for the students and volunteers.
Kate Geeson, managing trustee for the charity which is based on Cambridge Road Industrial Estate, said: “The work shed is a fantastic addition. It will enable our students to work in a better environment and also enhances an area that previously looked a bit scruffy to customers arriving at our premises for the first time.
“Popularity in the products that we offer at The Phoenix Trust has been growing all the time. We have already supplied signs and picnic benches for the Milton Country Park and for The Centre Partnership at Cottenham Village College. This new work area will help us to make even more products as we expand the organisation in the future.”
Every quarter Cambridge Water donates money to local community groups and good causes that operate within the Cambridge Water supply area. The money can be used to fund a wide variety of initiatives, ranging from equipment for sports clubs to toys for playgroups. It can also be used to fund special projects, such as building bat boxes or establishing nature reserves.
