Cambridge Water has confirmed household bills for water supply will reduce by an average of 0.7 per cent from April 2010.

The announcement means Cambridge Water customers will still continue to enjoy the second lowest bills for water supply in the country.

Metered customers, who make up over 60 per cent of customers, will be paying an average water bill of £105. Unmetered customers will pay an average of £129.   The difference in average bills demonstrates the water savings made by metered customers reducing both their bills and the environmental impacts of water abstraction and waste disposal.

Charging for waste water removal and treatment remains the responsibility of Anglian Water.

Stephen Kay, managing director for Cambridge Water, said: “Compared to last year our prices will remain broadly the same.

“To set the prices we have undergone an extensive review with our regulator Ofwat into our activities for the following five years. We have also listened to what our customers want – stable prices and investment in a safe and reliable water supply.

“Following its review, Ofwat has imposed significant efficiencies on us. Between now and 2015 our base operating costs must reduce by nearly 12 per cent and the amount we are allowed to return to our investors must also decrease by nearly 20 per cent.

“However, we are pleased Ofwat has recognised the importance we place on water quality and endorsed an investment of £8million to ensure the water we supply is not affected by the increase in nitrate levels we are finding in our boreholes.

“While we had hoped to invest more in our water supply network, we have listened to what our customers want and to keep prices stable in the current economic climate we have deferred many projects to 2015 and beyond.

“To help customers further manage their account we also offer a range of flexible payment options as well as advice on how they can reduce the cost of their water bill.

“For example, the cost of a typical metered water bill is now £24 cheaper than a typical unmetered bill. This highlights the financial benefits of being on a meter because customers only pay for the water they use. Fitting a meter is free of charge and customers can find out from Cambridge Water if they would benefit. Those who have signed up for direct debit can also save another £3 on their water bill in discounts.”
