Cambridge residents are being given a huge pat on the back for helping to raise more than £440,000 for Cambridge Water’s nominated charity, WaterAid.

WaterAid’s aim is to overcome poverty by enabling the world’s poorest people gain access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene education.

The staggering support means Cambridge Water customers have helped more than 29,000 people gain access to clean water and sanitation.

Cambridge Water began running the customer campaign in 2000. Since then 1200 people have given generously to the charity. In 2007 alone 124 Cambridge Water customers became supporters of WaterAid – adding more than £8000 a year to the funds.

Angharad McKenzie, individual supporters team manager from WaterAid, said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank Cambridge Water customers. With your invaluable participation in the customer campaign we will be able to ensure that our life saving work can continue.”

Stephen Kay, managing director of Cambridge Water, said: “I am delighted with the support our customers have shown to the WaterAid charity. Donating just £2 a month, over a year, can give a family safe, clean drinking water for life – proving that giving just a little can go a really long way.”
