Two leakage engineers from Cambridge Water will be hoping to avoid burst pipes when they take part in the Barcelona Banger Run next month.

Martin Russell and Ian Lees are taking part in the charity event which will see them drive their banger – a blue P-reg Peugeot 106 worth £160 – from Calais in France to Barcelona in Spain.

If all goes well they hope to complete the 980 mile trip in just three days – without any burst pipes, exploding gaskets or lost exhausts.

The duo are taking part in the trip to raise funds for WaterAid,  which is the UK’s only national charity dedicated exclusively to the provision of safe domestic water, sanitation and hygiene education to the world’s poorest people.

But Ian, 60, admits they hope to have a bit of fun along the way.

He said: “You could call this a bit of a midlife crisis. Martin and I have always been interested in cars and we just saw this as an opportunity to have a laugh and hopefully raise some funds for WaterAid at the same time.

“We bought the car for £160 after seeing it for sale on someone’s drive. We’ve done a bit of work on it and if it does let us down on the way it will be a case of make do and mend. If we can’t fix it, then we’ll just have to start walking.”

Barcelona Bangers was established in 2005 to give everyone who likes cars, travelling and having fun an opportunity to combine all three, and raise funds for charity. The rally is spread over a long weekend from Friday 22 to Sunday 24 May. Participants must drive cars that are worth less than £200 and will be set challenges on each day with points to collect en route. The team with the most points each day will receive a prize, and the team with the highest number of points overall will be declared the winner.
