As temperatures continue to fall, Cambridge Water is reminding customers to give their home a hug over the holiday period.

Lagging exposed water pipes and storage tanks is cheap and easy to do, and will help prevent bursts.

Caroline Maddox, head of communications for Cambridge Water, said:  "Plummeting temperatures can cause exposed pipework to freeze and in some cases burst. This is not just inconvenient – having cold water leak all over your home is expensive and can ruin treasured items.

“To help people prepare we are advising customers give their home a hug this winter. It is really quick and easy to do and could help save hundreds of pounds in repairing damage to flooring or furniture.”

Bubbles the Hippo – Cambridge Water’s cuddly mascot has been in Cambridge town centre to raise awareness of the Give Your Home a Hug campaign.

He joined the Cambridge Water team to hand out information leaflets and advise customers to Check, Heat, Insulate, Locate and Lag their homes or CHILL for short.

Check – you know where your stop tap is in case you need to turn it off in an emergency

Heat – Don’t let your property get too cold. If very frosty conditions persist set your thermostat to maintain a low level of heat throughout the night and while you are out during the day.

Insulate – Check that all cisterns and water tanks in unheated areas like lofts are adequately insulated around the sides and on the cover. Don’t put insulation underneath as warm air from below will help prevent water from freezing.

Locate and

Lag all exposed pipes. Foam lagging can be purchased cheaply from DIY shops or online and simply snaps over exposed pipework.

Caroline added: “By taking a few simple steps we can all help protect against the cold weather this winter – so go on, give your a home a hug! More information and a handy animation is available on our website here

Did you know…

While lagging cold water pipes can prevent bursts, lagging pipes which carry hot water helps keep the water hotter, allowing you to run your water heater at a lower temperature.
