Cambridge Water is advising its customers to be extra vigilant following a number of burglaries in the area where the offender has claimed to be from the “Water Board.”

Managing Director, Stephen Kay, said the most important thing to remember if someone comes to your door is to ask for identification.

“All Cambridge Water employees and their contractors carry identification which includes their photograph, the Cambridge Water logo and a contact telephone number. Most will also wear a uniform or high visibility clothing with a company logo on it, and drive a clearly marked vehicle.

“On the rare occasion that someone from Cambridge Water needs to enter a property please ask to see their ID. You can also call Cambridge Water on 01223 706050 to check if someone from the company is working in your area. If you are in any doubt do not let them in.”

Mr Kay added: “We want to do everything we can to stamp out this distressing crime.

“If you are at all unsure we would much rather you contact us to verify someone’s identity than take a risk. If we genuinely need to enter your property we will be polite, patient and understanding. We very rarely need to go upstairs and we certainly do not need to send more than one person in your house at any one time.

“Typically burglars will also claim to be from the “Water Board.” There is no such thing as water board anymore. We will always state that we are from Cambridge Water.”

Customers can also contact Cambridge Water to register a password of their choice. Anyone from the company who needs to gain access to your property will know the word and use it on request.

TOP TIPS

To reduce the risk of becoming the victim of a distraction burglar, always remember:

LOCK - Is your back door locked? If not, lock it before you answer the front door as distraction burglars often work in pairs - one distracts, while the other steals

STOP - Are you expecting anybody?

CHAIN - Put this on before you open the door. If you have not got one, it is a worthwhile investment. It will give you that extra 'safe space' and barrier between you and the caller and then,

CHECK - Ask for their identification card, take it and look at it carefully. Close the door and check the number in the phone book - not the number on the card. If they are genuine they will not mind waiting or coming back another day.
