Cambridge residents are being given a huge pat on the back for helping to raise more than £500,000 for Cambridge Water’s nominated charity, WaterAid since the campaign began.

WaterAid’s mission is to transform lives by improving access to safe water, hygiene and sanitation in the world's poorest communities.

The staggering support means Cambridge Water customers have helped more than 66,780 people gain access to clean water and sanitation.

Stephen Kay, managing director for Cambridge Water, said: “I am delighted with the support our customers have shown to the WaterAid.

“The recent drought has served as a reminder of how precious our water supply is. The average person in Cambridge uses around 150 litres of water a day. Yet, in Burkina Faso, in West Africa, nine out of 10 people do not have access to sanitation and one in four have no access to clean water. On top of this droughts and reducing rainfall are increasing the need for sustainable, clean water supplies.

“Donating just £2 a month, over a year, can give a person safe, clean drinking water for life – proving that giving just a little can go a really long way.”

Cambridge Water began running the customer campaign in 2000, has supported WaterAid for over 30 years and was instrumental in WaterAid’s formation. Since the start of the campaign 1442 people have given generously to the charity. In 2011 alone 67 Cambridge Water customers became regular supporters of WaterAid – adding more than £3000 a year to the funds. WaterAid is also actively supported by staff at Cambridge Water who raise hundreds of pounds for the charity every year.

Isabelle Herszenhorn, water industry partnership manager for WaterAid, said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank Cambridge Water customers. With your invaluable participation in the customer campaign we will be able to ensure that our life saving work in some of the world’s poorest communities can continue. Since 1981 we have reached nearly 16 million people with safe water and 11 million with sanitation; however of the world’s population one in 10 people don’t have access to water and one in three lack access to sanitation. The support of Cambridge Water and its customers will help us achieve our vision of a world where everyone has access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene education – so our deepest thanks for your support.”
