A group of 12 young carers from Cambridge will be enjoying a day out at Parkside Pool thanks to a grant from Cambridge Water.

The trip, which has been arranged by Centre 33, in Clarendon Street, Cambridge, will give some the first chance they have had to try swimming.

For others it will be an opportunity to enjoy a relaxing day out, meet other young carers and share their feelings.

Sam Hill, who applied to Cambridge Water for the grant on behalf of Centre 33, said: “All of the young people who are going on the trip either provide, or intend to provide, care assistance or support to another family member.

“The person they are caring for may be disabled, physically or mentally ill or have a substance misuse problem.

“Looking after them can put a lot of pressure on the young carer. Many carry out substantial caring tasks on a regular basis, and take on a level of responsibility that is inappropriate for their age or development. The demands of caring also mean many do not have time or money to have fun or socialise.

“Giving these young people a chance to take a day off and enjoy themselves with their peers is so important and we are grateful that Cambridge Water has been able to help out with the grant.”

Every quarter Cambridge Water donates money to local community groups and good causes that operate within the Cambridge Water supply area. The money can be used to fund a wide variety of initiatives, ranging from equipment for sports clubs to toys for playgroups. It can also be used to fund special projects, such as building bat boxes or establishing nature reserves.
