Review your water bills
If possible look at all your water bills from the previous three years, noting the annual consumption and cost. This should help you identify any seasonal trends or patterns.
You could also ask staff to complete a survey identifying where they think water is being used in your business and make suggestions for where they think water could be saved.
Produce a water balance
Using the information you have obtained above, consider producing a water balance. This is a numerical account of where water enters and leaves your business and where it is used.
To help you produce a water balance visit the Envirowise website where you can download a monitoring tool
The Water account tool 'benchmark your water use' allows you to compare your water consumption with that of other companies in your sector, helping you to gauge your performance relative to businesses who may well be your competitors.
Identify where you can make water savings
Once you have identified where your business using using water, you can then identify where you can make savings.
The Environment Agency's website details how you can reduce your water use, and where improvements can be carried out.
Alternatively, the Waternet Tool on the Envirowise website will help you to find publications produced by Envirowise and other organisations concerning best practice in water minimisation.
You can either search for material specific to your business sector or by water issue. Water issues covered by the tool range from water use in processing and ancillary activities to water saving devices, water auditing and case studies.
