Running taps
-
Running taps use 10 litres of water every minute!
-
Dripping taps - one drop per second wastes 25 litres per day (that's all wasted
water)
| |
Don't leave taps dripping; replace any faulty
washers and ball-valves |
| |
Use a glass or mug to clean your teeth |
| |
Put a bowl in the kitchen sink to collect any
run-off water, such as when you are washing vegetables. Then use it to water
your garden or house plants |
| |
Fill a jug with water and keep it in the
fridge - this saves running the tap until the water is cold |
| |
When cleaning, fill a basin or bucket instead of
rinsing cloths under a running tap |
In the bathroom
-
Flushing the toilet uses 7-10 litres of water every time! Install a
simple-to-fit 'HIPPO' and you immediately reduce this by 2 litres. We can send
you a Hippo free of charge if you email us on
quality@cambridge-water.co.uk
or call 01223 706050.
-
Toilet flushing accounts for one third of the water used in the home. So, if
installing a new cistern, look out for the models with 6 or 7 litre flushes –
they will still work just as well!
Baths versus showers
-
A standard shower uses 35 litres every 5 minutes
-
An average depth bath uses 80 litres
-
A 'Power Shower' uses 80 litres

Automatic washing machines
-
An automatic washing machine uses between 70 and 120 litres of water each cycle
-
Avoid wasting water by making sure you have a full load each time you use it or
use the special half load setting
-
If buying a new machine, look for the energy efficient label. This will show
you how much water and electricity it uses
Dishwashers
-
A dishwasher uses 60 litres of water each time it is used
-
Make sure it is only used with a full load
-
Pre-rinsing the dishes (especially under a running tap) is not always necessary
and is very wasteful
Plumbing
-
Maintain your household plumbing system. A quarter of all leakage in the
Cambridge area is lost through leaks in our customers' pipes.
-
Insulate the pipes in your loft to avoid a winter freeze-up.
If you do find a leak, get it repaired
as soon as you can.
- If you suspect that your underground service pipe is
leaking ask us to investigate it for you. If we find a service pipe leak we
may be able to repair it free of charge.
-
Know where your internal stop tap is so that you can turn it off quickly in the
event of an emergency.
Meters
It is a fact that on average, our metered customers use 8
litres of water LESS each day than our unmetered customers. See section on
water meters.
