Finding a
plumber |
Approved contractor
/ plumber
The Regulations introduced the concept
of an Approved Contractor to identify plumbers who are competent
in the requirements of the Regulations. Approved Contractor
status carries certain statutory responsibilities, which benefit
plumbers and their customers. Water companies are entitled
to run Approved Contractor / Plumber schemes, as well as any
organisation appointed by the Secretary of State.
Cambridge Water along with the majority
of water companies subscribe to the Water Industry Approved
Plumber Scheme (WIAPS) whose members have demonstrated their
experience of plumbing work and knowledge of the Regulations.
They will also have public liability insurance cover. This
scheme is run by the Water Regulations Advisory Service (WRAS)
on the water company’s behalf.
Approved Contractors are more commonly
know, as Approved Plumbers. An Approved Plumber will self
certify (Regulation 6) that their installation or maintenance
work satisfies the Regulations. If breaches of Regulations
are then found in the certified work, the legal responsibility
falls upon the Approved Plumber and not on the owner or occupier.
If you are using an Approved Plumber be sure that you receive
a certificate for the work carried out.
Under Regulation 5, if someone proposes
to carry out work on anything other than a house they have
a choice. They can either notify their local Water Company
or use an Approved Plumber / Contractor who will always issue
a Water Regulation Compliance certificate. This certificate
is important as it states the work has been carried out and
the fittings used meet the requirements of the regulations.
It is similar to the CORGI gas safety certificate.
Please note: Non-approved
plumbers / contractors are unable to issue such certificates.
For further information on the regulations
see the water regulation compliance
section.

Finding a plumber
If you need the services of a plumber
it is advised that you seek the services of an Approved Plumber.
A list of Approved Plumbers is available online from the WRAS
website. To get the best from this site carry out several
searches.
Start search by selecting Cambridge
Water Company; try new searches using only local postcodes
such as CB, PE, SG or IP. This will get
you the widest selection of plumbers to choose from, click
on the company name to view the names and contact details.
